Pakistani social media star Sana Yousaf was tragically shot and killed at her home in Islamabad on June 2. She was just 17 years old, having celebrated her birthday only a few days earlier, on May 29. The heartbreaking event happened in front of her mother and aunt.
The police quickly arrested a suspect named Umar Hayat, a 22-year-old man from Faisalabad, which is about 320 kilometers away from Islamabad. Islamabad’s police chief, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, called him a "cold-blooded murderer" and said he is now in custody.
According to the police, Umar Hayat had tried many times to contact Sana Yousaf and wanted to be friends with her. However, Sana had rejected him repeatedly. On the day of the murder, Umar spent several hours trying to meet her, but she did not respond. After being rejected multiple times, he broke into her house and shot her.
The police explained that Umar first faced rejection through phone calls, but then it turned into a violent act. Sana’s mother filed the First Information Report (FIR), stating that Umar came into their home with a pistol at about 5 pm and shot Sana at very close range. Two bullets hit her chest. She was taken to the hospital but sadly did not survive.

Umar Hayat had only finished his basic schooling and came from a family with limited income. Police say he took Sana’s mobile phone after the shooting, likely to destroy evidence. Both the phone and the gun were later found by investigators.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, confirmed that Umar confessed to the murder. Early reports had suggested the killing might have been related to family or honor issues, but police quickly ruled that out. The investigation was difficult, with no clear leads at first.
The police arrested Umar after conducting several search operations, including three in Islamabad and eight in other cities. They continue to investigate the case, aiming to bring justice for Sana Yousaf.
