Oscar Piastri, the leader in the Formula One championship, earned pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix after beating his teammate and title rival Lando Norris by a clear margin. The McLaren team showed great strength by taking both the first and second spots in Saturday’s qualifying session at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Max Verstappen from Red Bull, who won the race last year, qualified third. He had the same time as George Russell from Mercedes, but Verstappen will start third because he set his time before Russell. Russell will start fourth.
In the final top 10 shootout, Piastri first set a time of 1 minute and 11.836 seconds. Norris then beat that by 0.017 seconds, using a clever aerodynamic tow from Piastri’s car. Even with new rules on front wing flexing, McLaren remains far ahead of other teams.
Norris, who recently won the Monaco Grand Prix and has closed the points gap to just three behind Piastri, improved his time further to 1:11.755. But Piastri was faster still, with a brilliant final lap of 1:11.546, beating Norris by 0.209 seconds.

This is Piastri’s fourth pole position in nine races this season.
After the session, Piastri said, “It wasn’t a perfect lap, but it’s hard to keep the tyres working well around this track. I’m happy with all the work we have done.” Over the radio, he jokingly called Norris’s slipstream move “cheeky.”
Norris admitted he made a few small mistakes. “I made some small errors in Turn One and Turn Four. Those mistakes hurt my tyres for the rest of the lap,” he said. “It’s still a good result for the team to get first and second. Tomorrow’s race will be interesting.”
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has won the Spanish Grand Prix six times, qualified fifth for Ferrari. He was ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc for the second time this season.
Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli was sixth, while Leclerc qualified seventh. Leclerc only managed one flying lap because he ran out of new tyres. He explained, “We only had four new soft tyres for qualifying, while other teams had five. I took a risk today, hoping it pays off tomorrow. If not, that’s my fault.”
Pierre Gasly from Alpine will start eighth, and Isack Hadjar from Racing Bulls qualified ninth.
McLaren’s team boss, Andrea Stella, said the team was not worried about the new rules on wing flexibility, which some rivals hoped would slow them down. He told Sky Sports, “We were confident our simulations showed only small changes. We weren’t worried.”
Spain’s two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who has not scored any points this season, finished tenth in front of his home fans driving for Aston Martin.
On the other side, Verstappen’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda had a tough day and qualified last. Alpine’s rookie Franco Colapinto also started at the back after a problem leaving the pit lane during the first part of qualifying.
Finally, Sauber’s Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto did well to qualify 12th.
The Spanish Grand Prix promises to be exciting, with McLaren showing strong pace but many top drivers ready to challenge. Fans will be eager to see if Piastri can keep his lead in the race tomorrow.
