A hacker gained access to OpenAI's internal messaging systems last year and stole information related to the company's artificial intelligence technology designs, according to a report by the New York Times on Thursday. The breach involved details discussed in an online forum where OpenAI employees talked about the company's latest technological developments, the report noted, citing two individuals familiar with the incident.
The hacker did not infiltrate the core systems where OpenAI, the company known for its chatbot sensation ChatGPT, develops and houses its AI models, the report clarified.
Despite the seriousness of the breach, OpenAI executives did not consider it a national security threat. They believed the hacker was a private individual with no links to any foreign government. This belief led them to decide against notifying federal law enforcement agencies about the incident.

OpenAI executives informed their employees during an all-hands meeting in April last year and also briefed the company’s board about the breach. However, they chose not to make the news public, reasoning that no customer or partner information had been compromised.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
In a separate instance in May, OpenAI reported having disrupted five covert influence operations that attempted to misuse its AI models for deceptive activities on the internet. This incident added to the growing concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology.
Amid these security concerns, the Biden administration is reportedly planning to introduce new measures to protect U.S. AI technology from potential threats posed by China and Russia. Preliminary plans include placing guardrails around the most advanced AI models, such as ChatGPT, according to a Reuters report.
In May, sixteen companies involved in AI development pledged at a global meeting to ensure the safe development of the technology. This commitment comes at a time when regulators are struggling to keep pace with the rapid advancements and emerging risks associated with AI innovation.
