Red Bull’s Max Verstappen claimed victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday, but all eyes were on McLaren’s Lando Norris, who strengthened his lead in the championship fight. Norris finished second in the night race and extended his points advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri to 30.
The race took place under the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip, where drivers battled on a fast and demanding street circuit. Norris entered the race as the championship leader and needed a strong result to keep his title hopes alive. With only two more races and one sprint left in the season, he now sits at 408 points, ahead of Piastri on 378. Verstappen also remains mathematically in the title race with 366 points.
Piastri crossed the line in fourth, but only after Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli received a five-second time penalty for jumping the start. George Russell, who was celebrating his 150th race start along with Norris, finished third for Mercedes.
Verstappen had a near-perfect race. He overtook Norris at the start when the McLaren driver ran wide at the first corner, allowing both Verstappen and Russell to slip ahead. From there, Verstappen steadily built his lead and eventually won by more than 20 seconds.
The win marked Verstappen’s 69th career victory, his sixth of the season, and his eighth consecutive podium. It also came during Red Bull’s 150th race with Honda.
"It was quite a decent gap in the end," Verstappen said, happy with the car’s performance.
Although Norris missed out on the win, his second-place finish keeps him in a strong position to win his first Formula One championship. He joked that he “let Max have the win,” before admitting he braked too late at the start, which cost him the early lead.
Despite the slip, Norris recovered well, retaking second place from Russell on lap 34. He then had to carefully manage fuel for the rest of the race.
McLaren has already secured the Constructors’ Championship for the second year in a row, and now Norris has the chance to seal the Drivers’ Championship next weekend in Qatar.
The race saw several dramatic moments:
Oscar Piastri dropped from fifth to seventh early after contact with Liam Lawson, though he later recovered to finish fourth.
Lance Stroll and Gabriel Borteleto collided on the first corner, forcing both to retire.
The Virtual Safety Car appeared twice due to debris on the track.
Alex Albon and Lewis Hamilton collided, with Albon receiving a penalty. Hamilton still fought from last on the grid to finish in the points.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished sixth, while Carlos Sainz secured seventh for Williams. Isack Hadjar was eighth for Racing Bulls, followed by Nico Hulkenberg and Hamilton completing the top ten.
With just three sessions left this season, the championship fight is more intense than ever. All eyes now turn to Qatar, where Norris could finally clinch his long-awaited world title.
