Tesla's 'Mad Max' FSD Mode Sparks NHTSA Safety Probe

Tesla’s newest Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature, dubbed “Mad Max” mode, is raising eyebrows after reports surfaced of vehicles operating at speeds above posted limits. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed on Friday that it is actively seeking information from Tesla about the feature.

This advanced driver assistance mode, according to social media posts by some Tesla owners, enables cars to accelerate quickly and weave through traffic at a pace described as “incredible,” giving the impression of a sports car on public roads. NHTSA, however, cautions that drivers remain fully responsible for controlling the vehicle and obeying traffic laws.

Investigation into Safety Concerns

The agency had earlier opened a broad investigation into nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD, following dozens of reports of traffic violations and crashes. Among the complaints are 14 crashes and 23 injuries, as well as several instances where vehicles ran red lights while FSD was engaged. Some reports highlight collisions at intersections despite clear traffic signals, raising questions about the reliability of the system in real-world driving scenarios.

NHTSA’s review follows a year-long scrutiny of Tesla’s FSD system, which is designed to assist drivers rather than replace them. The system still requires active human supervision and intervention, but its more aggressive behavior under Mad Max mode has triggered concern among regulators.

What Tesla Says About FSD

Tesla has maintained that FSD can drive “almost anywhere with minimal intervention” while still emphasizing that the driver must remain attentive. The company has not issued an official statement regarding the NHTSA inquiry into Mad Max mode but previously promoted the mode’s ability to navigate traffic quickly and smoothly.

Industry observers note that Tesla’s approach with Mad Max reflects a push to make FSD feel more dynamic, yet it also underscores the ongoing tension between innovative driving assistance technology and road safety enforcement.
