New Zealand clinched a thrilling victory against England by four wickets in the opening ODI at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, on Sunday. Despite a powerful century from England’s Harry Brook, the Kiwis showed remarkable composure to chase down 224 runs in just 36.4 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
The New Zealand vs England match saw intense drama as the hosts stumbled early in their innings. Kane Williamson, playing his first match since March, was dismissed for a first-ball duck. At 70-4, England seemed in control, but Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 78 and Michael Bracewell’s solid 51 steadied the innings. The pair added a crucial partnership that turned the game around, supported later by Mitch Santner’s quickfire 27 that sealed the win.
For England, Harry Brook was the lone warrior. His explosive 135 off just 101 balls was a masterclass in counter-attacking batting. Walking in at a time when England were reeling at 56-6, Brook single-handedly revived the innings. With Jamie Overton’s handy 46, England managed to post 223 in 35.2 overs — a total that looked competitive given the early movement on the pitch.
New Zealand’s bowlers had earlier ripped through England’s top order. Zak Foulkes was the standout performer with figures of 4-41, swinging the ball dangerously and dismantling England’s batting lineup alongside Matt Henry (2-53). However, Brook’s onslaught, featuring 11 sixes, ensured England had something to defend.
Speaking after the match, New Zealand captain Mitch Santner praised his side’s intent. “There was still a lot in the wicket. We lost a few more wickets than we’d have liked, but Daryl and Michael’s partnership was massive for us,” he said. He also lauded Foulkes’ spell: “The way Zak swung it was incredible — it looked like a nightmare to face.”
Man of the match Harry Brook said he was happy with his performance despite the loss. “We didn’t get off to a great start, but I tried to counter-attack. It worked today, though we fell short with the ball in the middle overs,” he added.
With this win, New Zealand takes early control of the ODI series after losing the preceding T20 series 1-0. The second ODI between New Zealand and England will be played in Hamilton on Wednesday, where England will aim to bounce back and level the series.
