The Netherlands has confirmed its first case of the new mpox variant, marking the first time the mpox variant 1b has been detected in the country. Dutch Health Minister Jan Anthonie Bruijn announced the development in a letter to parliament, stating that global health bodies are closely monitoring the situation. The mpox variant case in the Netherlands has raised concerns due to its higher transmissibility, even though authorities believe the risk of wider spread remains low.

The infection was identified on October 17, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Officials confirmed that the infected man had not been vaccinated against mpox and had no recent travel history, suggesting local transmission. Health authorities have placed the patient in isolation, while contact tracing and source identification are underway. The mpox variant detection in the Netherlands is being treated with high caution to prevent any further spread.

Minister Bruijn assured citizens that the risk of mpox variant transmission in the Netherlands remains limited. “The situation is under control, and public health services are taking all necessary measures,” he said. Both the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are collaborating with Dutch authorities to track the spread and nature of the new strain.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral infectious disease that spreads mainly through close contact — including skin-to-skin or face-to-face interaction. The mpox variant 1b has been reported to be more contagious, making early detection and prevention even more critical. Common mpox symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, fatigue, and painful skin rashes or lesions.

Health experts warn that mpox transmission can also occur through contaminated objects such as clothing or linens, as well as through respiratory droplets during prolonged close contact. People with multiple sexual partners and healthcare workers handling infected materials face higher exposure risks. Pregnant women are also advised to take precautions, as mpox infections during pregnancy can cause serious complications for the baby.

According to RIVM, more research is needed to understand how the new mpox variant spreads in different environments. Authorities are urging citizens to remain calm, follow hygiene measures, and seek medical advice if they develop symptoms. The discovery of the mpox variant in the Netherlands underscores the need for global vigilance and coordinated monitoring to prevent future outbreaks.
