Nepal’s new Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, has expanded her interim cabinet, signaling a new beginning after last month’s violent protests that shook the nation. The protests, driven by young citizens demanding change, left at least 73 people dead and forced the previous government to resign. Amid the turmoil, Karki, a 73-year-old former chief justice, stepped in to lead the Himalayan nation toward stability and reform.
On Sunday, Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath to two new ministers — Bablu Gupta, a 28-year-old youth icon and social activist, and Dr. Sudha Sharma, a respected health expert and author. The cabinet expansion reflects Karki’s commitment to including youth voices and professionals in governance.
Gupta, who heads the volunteer group 100’s Group, is admired for his social work focused on food drives and education programs for underprivileged communities. His appointment as Youth and Sports Minister has been widely welcomed, particularly among the younger generation who led the September protests.
Dr. Sudha Sharma, appointed as Minister of Health and Population, brings years of experience in public health and maternal care. Her leadership in policy reforms and advocacy for healthcare accessibility has made her a trusted name in the sector.
Officials say Karki has proposed two more names for her 10-member cabinet, but the appointments are on hold pending further consultations with youth representatives. A source from the president’s office revealed that talks are still underway to finalize the full lineup.
Karki, who took charge in the aftermath of violent unrest, faces the enormous task of healing a divided nation, restoring trust in leadership, and preparing for national elections scheduled for March 5. Her promise of “clean governance and unity” has resonated deeply with citizens yearning for reform after years of political instability.
The inclusion of Gupta and Sharma in Nepal’s interim government has sparked optimism across the country. For many, it marks the start of a generational shift — a step toward a transparent and inclusive political future.
