Heavy rains in Nepal over the past 36 hours triggered landslides and flash floods, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 people and leaving 8 others missing. The calamity has also blocked key highways and roads across the country, officials reported on Sunday.
According to police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki, 12 people sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Rescue operations are underway to clear the landslides and debris using heavy equipment.
In southeastern Nepal, the Koshi River has surpassed its danger level, prompting authorities to issue alerts to residents about potential floods. Bed Raj Phuyal, a senior official from Sunsari district where the river flows, stated that as of 0900 hours local time, the water flow in the Koshi River reached 369,000 cusecs per second, significantly higher than its normal flow of 150,000 cusecs. All 56 sluice gates of the Koshi Barrage have been opened to manage the excess water.
