NASA’s Artemis II astronauts have commenced their journey back home after a groundbreaking mission that took them around the Moon, symbolizing a return to deep space exploration after over half a century.
Aboard the Orion spacecraft, named “Integrity,” the team, which includes Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, is on course for an expected Pacific Ocean splashdown near Southern California.
As the mission reaches its final stages, the Orion capsule will detach from its service module before the critical reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. This reentry phase will result in a temporary loss of communication lasting about six minutes due to intense thermal conditions and plasma activity.
The capsule will endure severe conditions upon reentry, with speeds nearing 40,235 kilometers per hour. Externally, temperatures will soar to around 2,760 degrees Celsius, placing stress on Orion’s heat shield.
NASA engineers have made necessary adjustments to the reentry trajectory based on observations from a previous test flight in 2022, where the heat shield faced unanticipated strain. These alterations are designed to mitigate heat accumulation, ensuring a safer homecoming for the astronauts.
Launching on April 1 from Cape Canaveral via the powerful Space Launch System rocket, this mission propelled the crew further into space than any human mission has ventured in decades, reaching over 252,756 miles from Earth and eclipsing the Apollo 13 record from 1970.
Successful completion of the mission will be marked by a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, representing a significant achievement for NASA’s Artemis program and setting the stage for future manned lunar exploration.
