On Monday morning, a tragic accident took place on Mumbai’s busy local train network, highlighting the dangers of overcrowding during rush hour. The incident happened between Diva and Kopar stations in Thane district, when a Kasara-bound train was packed with commuters.
According to officials, the accident likely occurred when people hanging from the footboards of two passing trains brushed against each other due to the heavy crowd. The trains were moving at high speed on a curved section of track, which may have reduced the space between them and made the situation even more dangerous.
At least four people lost their lives, including a Government Railway Police (GRP) constable named Vicky Babasaheb Mukhyal. The other victims were Ketan Saroj, Rahul Gupta, and Mayur Shah. Six more passengers, including both men and women, were injured and are being treated at local hospitals. Some of the injured suffered serious head and leg injuries, while others had broken bones.

Eyewitnesses described how the overcrowded conditions forced many people to stand at the train doors, holding onto handles or footboards. When the two trains passed each other, bags and bodies collided, causing several people to lose their grip and fall onto the tracks. Rescue teams and fellow passengers quickly helped the injured and rushed them to hospitals.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident “very unfortunate” and ordered a full inquiry. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde promised support for the victims’ families and stressed that saving lives must be the top priority. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said the tragedy is a reminder of the urgent need to fix overcrowding and improve safety on Mumbai’s trains.
Railway officials are investigating all possible causes, including whether crowding, a push, or even an argument led to the disaster. Some officials also mentioned the risk of criminal gangs who sometimes target passengers on footboards. The Central Railway has announced plans to introduce automatic door-closing features on all new local trains and retrofit older ones to prevent such accidents in the future.
Local leaders and commuter groups have criticized railway authorities for not doing enough to address overcrowding, which claims many lives every year in Mumbai. This accident is a painful reminder that urgent action is needed to make daily train travel safer for everyone.
