Apple has once again stirred debate with its latest accessory, the iPhone Pocket, priced at a staggering £219.95. The US tech giant unveiled the product on Tuesday, describing it as a designer carrying case for iPhones. But the announcement quickly became fodder for online mockery, with critics questioning both its practicality and steep price.
The iPhone Pocket, created in collaboration with Japanese fashion label Issey Miyake, comes in a range of bright colors. Apple described the accessory as inspired by “a piece of cloth” and designed to offer an “additional pocket” for users. The collection features short straps in eight colors and longer straps in three, reflecting a blend of fashion and utility.
Yet, social media reactions were swift and unrelenting. Many compared the case to everyday household items, with one user humorously dubbing it “$230 for a cut-up sock.” Others noted its sock-like structure and lack of zippers, raising concerns about security given the risk of iPhone thefts. Playful memes even likened it to the iconic green mankini worn by Sacha Baron Cohen’s fictional character, Borat.
Despite the criticism, some defended the price, pointing out the significance of the collaboration with Issey Miyake and highlighting the accessory as a symbol of brand heritage. The bold colors, limited-edition release, and designer influence suggest Apple is positioning the iPhone Pocket as a luxury fashion statement rather than a purely functional item.
With fans and critics divided, the iPhone Pocket raises a broader question about the limits of consumer loyalty in the tech world. While Apple enthusiasts may see it as a collectible accessory, many others view the price as a test of brand devotion, blurring the line between technology and fashion.
