Pacer Mohammed Shami's participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) has been abruptly halted due to a left ankle injury, necessitating surgery in the UK. The 33-year-old, presently excluded from the ongoing Test series against England, last played for India during the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November. Despite initial treatment in London, including special ankle injections, Shami's condition failed to improve, leaving surgery as the sole recourse. Consequently, his IPL prospects appear dim, according to a senior BCCI source.
Shami, a key contributor to India's successful World Cup campaign with 24 wickets, continued playing through discomfort during the tournament despite landing issues. His commendable performance masked underlying injury concerns. Recently honored with the Arjuna Award, Shami boasts an impressive track record with 229 Test, 195 ODI, and 24 T20 wickets amassed over his decade-long career. However, his current setback casts doubt on the effectiveness of the injury rehabilitation program devised by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
With Shami's IPL journey curtailed, attention now turns to his recovery timeline and potential return to the field. It appears unlikely that he will feature in India's Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October and November. Instead, the focus may shift towards his participation in the crucial away series against Australia. Criticism has arisen regarding the NCA's conservative approach to Shami's treatment, with suggestions that prompt surgery might have yielded better results. As a valuable asset to the Indian team, Shami's availability for future engagements, especially against formidable opponents like Australia, remains a priority for cricket authorities.
