The Embassy of the United Mexican States in the United Arab Emirates hosted a vibrant reception at the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi to celebrate Mexico’s National Day. The occasion was marked not only by the commemoration of Mexican independence but also by the recognition of 50 years of enduring diplomatic ties between Mexico and the UAE.

The event was attended by distinguished guests, including Sheikha Hessa bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Deputy Director of the American Affairs Department at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Also present were senior Emirati officials, ambassadors and representatives of Arab and foreign diplomatic missions accredited in the UAE, as well as members of the Mexican expatriate community.

A celebration of history and friendship

National Day in Mexico, celebrated on 16 September, commemorates the historic moment in 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called upon the people of Dolores to rise up against colonial rule, an event remembered as “El Grito de Dolores.” The date represents not only independence but also the spirit of resilience and unity of the Mexican people.

For the Mexican Embassy in Abu Dhabi, this year’s celebration carried a dual significance. Alongside the patriotic festivities, the occasion marked five decades of formal diplomatic relations between Mexico and the UAE, a partnership that has grown steadily since its establishment in 1975.

Ambassador’s address

During his keynote speech, Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba Góngora welcomed the gathering and reflected on the progress of UAE-Mexico relations. He emphasized that the bilateral relationship has been characterized by mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple fields.

“This evening is more than a celebration of our independence,” the Ambassador said. “It is also an opportunity to honor fifty years of strong diplomatic engagement with the United Arab Emirates. Our nations may be geographically distant, but we are bound together by a shared vision of development, prosperity, and cultural exchange.”

He highlighted that the UAE has become Mexico’s most important trading partner in the Arab world, with growing investments and commercial ties in energy, aviation, tourism, and food security.

Economic and trade partnerships

Over the years, Mexico and the UAE have steadily built economic bridges. Bilateral trade has witnessed consistent growth, driven by Mexican exports such as agricultural products, processed foods, and automotive parts, while the UAE has contributed investments in infrastructure, logistics, and renewable energy.

The Ambassador pointed out that ongoing negotiations are creating new opportunities for cooperation in sectors like clean energy, advanced technology, and sustainable development. With both nations focusing on diversifying their economies, there is a strong foundation for future collaboration.

He also noted that reciprocal high-level visits have played a critical role in cementing ties. Senior officials and ministers from both countries have exchanged visits, fostering trust and ensuring that opportunities for collaboration are translated into practical outcomes.

Diplomatic milestones

The UAE and Mexico established diplomatic relations in 1975, and since then, several milestones have defined their partnership. The opening of embassies in both capitals, direct flights connecting the two countries, and multiple bilateral agreements have broadened the scope of engagement.

Cultural diplomacy has also been an important aspect of the relationship. Events such as art exhibitions, culinary festivals, and educational exchanges have introduced Emiratis to Mexico’s rich heritage, while Mexicans have had the chance to learn about the UAE’s dynamic traditions and rapid modernization.

Mexican culture showcased

The National Day reception included a lively showcase of Mexican folkloric arts, reflecting the country’s vibrant cultural identity. Guests were treated to performances of traditional dances accompanied by music that highlighted Mexico’s diverse regional heritage. The performances captivated the audience, offering a glimpse of the colorful traditions that continue to thrive in Mexican society.

The evening also featured displays of Mexican cuisine, giving attendees the opportunity to savor authentic flavors. From tacos and enchiladas to signature desserts, the culinary spread underscored how gastronomy serves as a bridge of cultural understanding.

Strengthening community ties

For the Mexican community living in the UAE, the National Day reception served as both a reminder of home and a chance to celebrate their identity abroad. Members of the community mingled with diplomats and Emirati guests, symbolizing the close ties between people on both sides.

Many attendees expressed their pride in seeing Mexico’s culture honored in such a prestigious setting and welcomed the opportunities for stronger people-to-people connections.

Shared values and future cooperation

In his remarks, Ambassador Góngora underlined that the UAE and Mexico share values such as tolerance, multiculturalism, and an outward-looking approach to international engagement. These commonalities provide a platform for both nations to work together in addressing global challenges, including climate change, food security, and innovation in technology.

The Ambassador also referenced the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations as a springboard for the future, emphasizing that both countries are eager to deepen their collaboration not only in trade and investment but also in education, culture, and scientific research.

UAE’s representation and support

Sheikha Hessa bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, representing the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, congratulated Mexico on its National Day and reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to strengthening ties with Mexico. Her presence at the event highlighted the UAE’s recognition of Mexico as a valuable partner in the Arab world and beyond.

She praised the progress achieved in bilateral relations and stressed the importance of continued dialogue, exchange, and mutual support to unlock new opportunities in various sectors.

As both countries celebrate this historic milestone, there is growing optimism that Mexico-UAE relations will enter a new phase of collaboration. The partnership stands as an example of how nations, despite geographical distance, can find common ground in shared aspirations and values.

The National Day reception not only honored Mexico’s independence but also served as a reminder of how diplomacy can bring nations together, blending history, culture, and shared ambition into a lasting friendship.
