The New York Mets have completed a trade with the Texas Rangers, acquiring second baseman Marcus Semien in exchange for outfielder Brandon Nimmo, according to multiple reports Sunday night. This deal is aimed at improving the Mets’ infield strength and adding an experienced All-Star to their roster ahead of the 2026 season.
Semien, 35, is a three-time All-Star who has three years remaining on his seven-year, $175 million contract. He missed the final five and a half weeks of the 2025 season after breaking his left foot on August 21. Despite the injury, Semien has been a consistent performer throughout his career and was a key member of the Rangers’ 2023 World Series-winning team. In that championship season, he played all 162 games, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 100 RBIs.
In the 2025 season, Semien played 127 games before his foot injury, finishing with a .230 batting average, 15 home runs, and 62 RBIs. Over his career, he has a .253 average, 253 home runs, and 801 RBIs in 1,629 games, including stints with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Texas Rangers. Notably, Semien has finished third in American League MVP voting three times, with three different teams: the A’s in 2019, the Blue Jays in 2021, and the Rangers in 2023.
Brandon Nimmo, 32, agreed to waive his no-trade clause to make this deal happen. Nimmo has five seasons remaining on his eight-year, $162 million contract. Since making his major league debut with the Mets in 2016, Nimmo has been a reliable outfielder, playing over 150 games in each of the last four seasons. In 2025, he batted .262 with a career-high 25 home runs and 92 RBIs in 155 games. Overall, Nimmo has a .262 batting average, 135 home runs, and 463 RBIs in 1,066 games with the Mets.
This trade highlights the Mets’ strategy to strengthen their infield and acquire a veteran player with proven postseason experience. Semien’s versatility and leadership are expected to provide a boost to the team’s lineup, while Nimmo gives the Rangers a capable outfielder with consistent performance at the plate.
With Semien joining the Mets, fans can anticipate a stronger offensive and defensive performance in the upcoming season. His experience and consistency in major league baseball, along with his past achievements, make him a key addition to the Mets’ roster. Meanwhile, Nimmo will continue to play an important role for the Rangers as they rebuild their team.
The trade demonstrates both teams’ commitment to improving their rosters and achieving success in the next MLB season. The Mets gain a top-tier player in Semien, while the Rangers receive a reliable outfielder in Nimmo. Fans from both sides will be eager to see how the new additions impact team performance in 2026.
