Meta Unveils AI Parental Controls for Teen Safety

Dubai: In a time when artificial intelligence doesn’t just assist us but actively chats with us, Meta is taking a serious step toward online safety. On October 17, the company announced upcoming AI-powered parental control features aimed at giving parents more oversight of how teenagers interact with AI characters across Meta’s platforms.

The move comes as concerns rise over how AI chatbots engage with minors, following reports of AI “companions” behaving inappropriately with underage users. Meta’s new initiative seeks to address those risks before they escalate further.

Under the preview, parents will soon be able to completely disable one-on-one chats between AI bots and their teens. For more flexibility, they can block specific AI characters they consider unsafe. While these restrictions won’t apply to Meta’s general AI assistant, the assistant will operate under age-appropriate limits, automatically filtering out sensitive or explicit material.

Meta is also adding a new layer of visibility for parents — insights about the topics their teens are discussing with AI bots, without revealing full chat histories. The idea, according to Meta, is to maintain a balance between protection and privacy.

The new controls will debut early next year, starting with Instagram for English-speaking users in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. Meta plans to expand the rollout gradually to other regions and languages.

At the same time, Instagram’s teen accounts will default to PG-13 content restrictions. This means exposure to strong language, mature themes, or graphic content will be limited unless parents choose otherwise. Even AI chatbots will be held to the same PG-13 standard when chatting with younger users.

Responding to Pressure and Public Concerns

Meta’s latest step is not just a technological update — it’s a response to growing regulatory and public scrutiny. Investigations have previously shown that certain AI chatbots on different platforms engaged in inappropriate conversations with users posing as minors. Lawsuits and advocacy groups have since called for stronger measures to protect children in digital and AI-driven environments.

By introducing these new safety tools, Meta is sending a clear message that it’s attempting to lead responsibly in AI regulation rather than waiting for government mandates. However, experts caution that the success of these features will depend on how many parents actually use them and understand their importance.
