Nineteen inmates, including six on death row, managed to escape from Rawalkot prison in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, with one inmate tragically dying from injuries sustained during the breakout. The incident unfolded around 2 to 2:30 pm on Sunday when a prisoner, under the guise of requesting to move his 'lassi' outside his barrack, seized the opportunity to overpower a sentry. After snatching the keys, he proceeded to unlock other barracks, enabling at least 19 prisoners to reach the main gate, as reported by Dawn citing police sources.
During the chaotic escape, gunfire erupted when a pistol was tossed into the compound, leading to one inmate sustaining injuries that proved fatal later at a local hospital. Despite ongoing plans for a new prison facility on the outskirts, progress has been sluggish. In response to the jailbreak, authorities swiftly took eight prison officials, including the deputy superintendent, into custody for investigation.

The government of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir acted promptly, forming an inquiry committee to probe the incident within a week. In a subsequent late-night announcement, information secretary Ansar Yaqoob revealed that PoK's Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq had suspended multiple prison officials and relieved Special Home Secretary Badar Munir of his duties as ex-officio Inspector General of Prisons. Munir was reassigned to the services department as Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Among the escapees were six individuals facing death sentences, reportedly led by Ghazi Shahzad from Sudhnoti district in PoK. Shahzad had been apprehended by the counter-terrorism department the previous year along with three accomplices from Hajira town, pending trial under the anti-terrorism act and APC Section 302. While Shahzad successfully evaded custody, his associates remained detained, along with another individual involved in a prior criminal incident, as per details provided by Dawn.
Authorities intensified security measures across the division, sealing all entry and exit points of Poonch to aid in the recapture of the escaped prisoners and maintain public safety amidst heightened tensions following the prison break.
