Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has spoken about the possible January moves of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee, explaining that while he understands their desire for more playing time, the club’s interests must come first.
Both Mainoo and Zirkzee have had very limited opportunities this season. Zirkzee, a Dutch forward, has played only 82 minutes in the Premier League, while England midfielder Mainoo has seen just 138 minutes since August. With neither player starting a top-flight match this season, their chances of impressing their national team coaches have dropped.
British media have reported that both players are considering a transfer in the January window. Their goal is to play more regularly before the 2026 World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19 in North America. With the World Cup approaching, both players hope a move could improve their chances of selection.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Manchester United’s league match against Everton, Amorim showed understanding of the players’ situations. “I was a football player. I understand everything, and I want to help my players in every situation,” he said. “I want my players to be happy. I understand the frustration of some players, seeing that the World Cup is there, and I know what it means for the World Cup.”
However, Amorim made it clear that the club comes first. “Manchester United comes first. So if I can help the club and the players, I will be happy; if not, I have to think about the team. The club comes first, so we have to think about the club and the team, and then everything can happen,” he added.
Despite limited playing time, there could be opportunities for both Mainoo and Zirkzee to play more in the coming weeks. With Benjamin Sesko injured and Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo expected to leave for the Africa Cup of Nations next month, both players might get more chances to show their talent.
Amorim’s comments suggest that while he respects the players’ ambitions, any potential moves will have to consider Manchester United’s needs first. The manager emphasized that the club’s performance and results take priority over individual player demands, though he remains supportive of their personal goals.
Mainoo and Zirkzee are young players with potential, and regular playing time is crucial for their growth. Moving in January could help them regain spots in their national teams, but the manager’s approach shows that decisions will be carefully balanced between personal ambitions and club commitments.
Manchester United fans will now watch closely to see if the two players get more minutes on the field in the league or other competitions. The January transfer window may offer options, but Amorim’s words highlight that any decision will be made with the club’s long-term goals in mind.
