In a major move shaking up the AI industry, Nvidia and Microsoft announced Tuesday investments totaling $15 billion in California-based AI startup Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot. Nvidia committed up to $10 billion, while Microsoft pledged up to $5 billion, intensifying the race among tech giants in generative AI.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic positions itself as a safety-focused AI company. Its flagship product, Claude, competes directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s newly launched Gemini models.
As part of the agreement, Anthropic will purchase $30 billion worth of Microsoft cloud services and adopt Nvidia’s latest AI chips. “We’re increasingly going to be customers of each other,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, highlighting a partnership that combines AI software and high-performance infrastructure.
This investment comes amid a surge in AI spending across the tech sector. Nvidia has become a dominant supplier of GPUs for AI workloads, while Microsoft continues to expand its Copilot AI offerings on the Azure platform. Recent reports value Anthropic at $350 billion, placing it among the most valuable private AI companies globally, behind only OpenAI.
Nvidia’s strategic focus extends beyond Anthropic, with recent announcements of a $100 billion investment into OpenAI and $5 billion into chipmaker Intel. Analysts note growing concerns over a potential AI bubble as companies pour tens of billions into generative AI projects.
With competition heating up between OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other AI players, the sector is entering a critical phase where innovation, compute power, and strategic partnerships will define leadership. The Anthropic deal highlights the growing interconnectedness between AI development and cloud infrastructure, setting the stage for the next wave of AI applications.
