Maharani 4, starring Huma Qureshi, returns with a fresh yet familiar political drama. The series thrives on sharp performances that elevate the already messy interpersonal relationships, turning Bihar’s political landscape into an enthralling game of strategy, revenge, and ambition.
The timing of the series’ release is serendipitous, coinciding with the first phase of Bihar’s 2025 Assembly Elections, which witnessed a record 64.66% voter turnout. The drama in reel Bihar couldn’t be more timely.
Picking Up the Pieces: From Past to Present
Maharani 4 picks up from where Season 3 left off, leaping from the early 2000s to the present day. Huma Qureshi returns as Rani Bharti, now the Chief Minister of Bihar, having sent the murderers of her husband and former CM Bheema Bharti (Soham Shah) to jail.
With her rivals behind bars, Rani Bharti’s ambition grows. She becomes more confident and independent, a development that does not sit well with her long-serving secretary Kaveri (Kani Kusruti), whose loyalty is tested as the political game intensifies.
New Alliances, New Threats
The political chessboard expands when Vipin Sharma’s PM Joshi, a well-educated and image-conscious leader, faces challenges within and outside his party. Allies from West Bengal and Tamil Nadu break away, prompting Joshi to approach Rani Bharti with the promise of a “double-engine ki sarkar” for Bihar—an offer she rejects on national television, marking a defining moment of political defiance.
Rani Bharti’s ambitions extend beyond Bihar, eyeing the Prime Minister’s throne, while her inner circle and party face division. The Rashtriya Janata Samajwadi Party is split between the Old Guard, led by Mishra ji (Pramod Pathak), and the Young Turks, headed by her impulsive son, Jai Prakash Bharti (Shardul Bharadwaj).
Family, Loyalty, and Leadership
In a strategic move, Rani Bharti entrusts her English-speaking, poised daughter, Roshni Bharti (Shweta Basu Prasad), with Bihar’s leadership, marking the emergence of a new generation of political power. Meanwhile, her youngest son Surya (Darsheel Safary) prefers a quiet life in London, refusing to dive into the political fray.
Rani Bharti’s secretary Kaveri, faces external poaching attempts by Joshi’s party, further complicating the inner dynamics of Rani’s loyal team.
Expanding the Political Landscape
Maharani 4 broadens its canvas, taking viewers from Bihar to Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Jammu & Kashmir, offering a multi-regional perspective on Indian politics. The series touches on language debates, nepotism, and meritocracy, blending political commentary with sharp family drama.
One memorable scene features siblings Roshni and Jai warning each other against becoming mirrors of their parents—Rani and Bheema Bharti—a nuanced moment that highlights both tender family bonds and the dangers of inherited political tendencies.
With a larger cast, higher stakes, and an expanded political commentary, Maharani 4 delivers an engaging political saga. It combines personal vendettas, party politics, and national ambitions while keeping the audience invested in both family and power struggles.
The season concludes back in Bihar, teasing more drama ahead and reminding viewers of Jai Prakash Bharti’s haunting words: “Personal is political, now political is personal.”
