Toulouse, France – French President Emmanuel Macron has declared that space is no longer a sanctuary, warning that modern conflicts are already extending beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Speaking at France’s space and aviation hub in Toulouse, Macron highlighted the growing threat posed by Russia, citing espionage activities and potential nuclear dangers in orbit.
“The war of today is already being fought in space, and the war of tomorrow will begin in space,” Macron said, emphasizing the urgent need for France to strengthen its space defense capabilities. He added, “Space is no longer a sanctuary, it has become a battlefield.”
Russian Threats in Space
Macron accused Russia of monitoring French satellites, jamming GPS signals, and conducting cyberattacks targeting space infrastructure following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. “The particularly shocking Russian threat of nuclear weapons in space would have disastrous effects for the entire world,” he warned.
To counter these threats, Macron announced an additional 4.2 billion euros ($4.9 billion) in funding for military space activities through 2030. The funding aims to bolster France’s space defense, including advanced surveillance and early-warning systems, while reducing reliance on other countries.
Strengthening European Space Capabilities
France’s space strategy also focuses on fostering competitiveness among European space firms, developing reusable launchers with low-cost propulsion, and improving high-thrust engines. Macron underscored the need for European independence in space technology, referencing ambitious private programs such as SpaceX and Blue Origin. “Depending on a major third-party power or any space magnate is out of the question,” he said.
In cooperation with Germany, France is also accelerating the development of advanced warning capabilities and reinforcing space surveillance through the Aurore radar system, ensuring that Europe can act decisively in times of crisis.
“France is investing in means of action from the ground and space while respecting international law, but without any naivety,” Macron concluded, signaling a new era of strategic space preparedness.
