Luciano Spalletti has confirmed that he will be stepping down as the head coach of Italy’s national football team. The news comes just days after Italy suffered a 3-0 defeat to Norway in their opening match of the World Cup qualifying campaign.
Spalletti shared the update during a press conference on Sunday. He said that he had met with Gabriele Gravina, the President of the Italian Football Federation, and was informed that he would be removed from his position as coach.
“We sat together last night. President Gravina told me that I will no longer be the coach of the national team,” Spalletti said.
The 65-year-old manager, who took over the Italy squad after their failed World Cup qualification in 2022, added that he did not want to leave the job. “I had no intention of stepping down. I would have liked to stay and keep working,” he said.

Despite the decision, Spalletti confirmed he will still lead the team in Monday’s game against Moldova. “I will be on the bench for the Moldova match. After that, we’ll sort out the details of my contract,” he added.
The loss to Norway was a tough blow for the Italian side, as fans expected a stronger start to the qualifiers. The future of the national team’s coaching role now remains uncertain as Italy looks to recover from the early setback.
