The Archdiocese of Cebu has expressed deep sorrow and grave concern after a woman in her early 30s was found dead inside the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey in Liloan, northern Cebu, on Friday, October 24. The violent incident has prompted church authorities to suspend all public worship until the sacred space is restored.
Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy described the act as a “grave violation” of the church’s sanctity. “I decree the temporary closure of the Parish Church of San Fernando Rey, Liloan. All public acts of divine worship are to be suspended until proper canonical procedures are completed to ensure reparation of this desecration,” he said. The Archdiocese reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the sanctity of all places of worship and called on the faithful to pray for the victim and her family.
Preliminary reports from CCTV footage and witness accounts indicate the woman was attacked inside the church. She was discovered unconscious around 9:30 a.m., with visible injuries including a head wound, blood from her nose, and dark marks around her neck, suggesting possible strangulation. Witnesses reported seeing the woman earlier with a man who was later asked to leave the church premises.
Authorities have identified the suspect as an unidentified man last seen wearing a black shirt. Police are urging the public to help identify both the victim and the attacker. Anyone with information or missing relatives matching the description is asked to contact the Liloan Municipal Police Station at 0998-598-6385.
The tragic incident has shocked the local community, drawing attention to the need for safety in public spaces of worship. The Archdiocese of Cebu’s swift suspension of services highlights the seriousness of the desecration and its commitment to restoring peace and sanctity within the church.
This violent incident has underscored how critical it is to protect sacred spaces. The Archdiocese of Cebu continues to appeal to the faithful to join in prayers, offering solidarity to the victim’s family during this tragic time.
