Kim Jong Un Warns of Nuclear Response If North Korea Faces Attack

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared that his military would utilize nuclear weapons "without hesitation" if the country faces an attack from South Korea and its ally, the United States. This statement was made during an inspection of a special forces training base in western Pyongyang.

According to Kim, any attempt by "the enemy" to encroach on North Korea's sovereignty would result in the immediate use of all offensive capabilities, including nuclear arms. His remarks followed a military parade in South Korea where President Yoon Suk Yeol warned of "the end of the North Korean regime" if the North chose to employ nuclear weapons. Yoon stressed that such an action would provoke a "resolute and overwhelming response" from the military alliance of the US and South Korea, stating, "That day will be the end of the North Korean regime," while addressing a gathering of thousands of service members at Seoul Air Base.

In a counter to Yoon's threats, Kim denounced the South Korean president as a "puppet" and described him as an "abnormal man." Kim’s statements underscored the significance of the US-South Korea military alliance, which plays a critical role in the region's security dynamics. Tens of thousands of US troops are stationed in South Korea, providing a nuclear umbrella for the nation, which does not possess its own nuclear arsenal.

The escalating tensions between the two Koreas come in the wake of North Korea revealing images of a uranium enrichment facility for the first time, a move that signals its intention to enhance its nuclear capabilities. The North, which conducted its first nuclear test in 2006, continues to push forward with its military ambitions.

Relations between North and South Korea have deteriorated significantly, marked by North Korea's recent announcement to deploy 250 ballistic missile launchers along its southern border. Pyongyang has labeled South Korea as its "principal enemy" and has declared itself an "irreversible" nuclear weapons power, raising concerns about regional stability and security.
