In a significant meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Pyongyang, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged strong support for China’s concept of a “multipolar world.” The discussions reflect deepening ties between these long-standing allies.
Kim reiterated North Korea’s endorsement of the “one-China principle,” reinforcing Beijing’s position regarding Taiwan. The talks also tackled crucial regional and global issues, signaling a closer strategic partnership.
Wang Yi, on a two-day visit, announced that the relationship is entering a “new phase” following recent diplomatic interactions, including a summit between Kim and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
These discussions occur as North Korea aims to bolster relations with key partners in light of escalating geopolitical tensions. Kim has been pursuing a more assertive foreign policy to reduce isolation and cultivate alliances against U.S. influence.
Furthermore, North Korea has enhanced its cooperation with Russia while maintaining robust economic and political ties with China. The resumption of direct flights and train services is indicative of recovering relations post-pandemic.
Wang Yi’s visit, marking his first in seven years, included engagements with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Sun Hui, concentrating on advancing exchanges and cooperation across different sectors.
This visit precedes a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, fostering hopes among diplomats for renewed efforts toward regional stability, although North Korea remains resolute in its opposition to U.S. demands regarding denuclearization.
