Kenyan forces leave for a mission supported by the UN to fight gang violence in Haiti

Kenyan forces have departed from Nairobi to lead a UN-backed multinational mission aimed at combating gang violence in Haiti, despite facing legal challenges against the deployment. Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki confirmed the departure of the initial batch of 400 officers, who boarded a Kenya Airways flight bound for Port-au-Prince. This deployment, which includes elite units from Kenya's National Police Service such as the Rapid Deployment Unit and General Service Unit, follows months of legal hurdles and controversies.

President William Ruto expressed strong support for the mission in a ceremonial send-off, emphasizing its historic significance and the hope it brings to violence-stricken communities in Haiti. The deployment was initially delayed by a Kenyan court ruling citing procedural concerns, but a subsequent bilateral agreement with Haiti paved the way for its resumption, despite ongoing legal challenges from opposition groups.

The United States, which is supporting the mission financially and logistically, has expressed optimism about its potential to improve security conditions in Haiti. However, concerns have been raised by human rights organizations regarding the mission's effectiveness and the record of Kenyan security forces in handling complex situations.

The mission's objective is crucial as Haiti continues to grapple with widespread gang violence, exacerbated by recent political instability and economic challenges. The arrival of Kenyan forces marks a pivotal moment in international efforts to stabilize the situation in Haiti, with other countries like Benin, Bangladesh, and Barbados also expressing readiness to contribute.
