Japan has issued a safety advisory for its citizens in China as diplomatic tensions between the two countries continue to deepen following recent remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan. The advisory, released by the Japanese embassy in Beijing, urges Japanese nationals to avoid crowded areas, stay aware of their surroundings, and exercise caution in daily interactions with Chinese citizens. It also reminds them to respect local customs and avoid travelling alone, especially when accompanied by children.
The warning was issued at a time when a senior Japanese foreign ministry official travelled to Beijing on November 18 to hold discussions aimed at easing the growing strain. China, however, has already responded strongly to Takaichi’s comments, which suggested that a Chinese attack on Taiwan threatening Japan’s security could trigger a military response from Tokyo. The statement led to one of the most serious diplomatic clashes between the two nations in years. A Chinese diplomat later posted a threatening comment directed at Takaichi on social media, prompting a firm protest from Japan, although the incident did little to reduce the wave of criticism amplified through Chinese state media.
The situation has also affected travel and the broader economy. China has urged its citizens to avoid visiting Japan, a move that poses a significant setback for Japan’s tourism sector, as Chinese visitors account for nearly one-fourth of all international tourists. Tourism-related stocks in Japan have already seen a decline as the dispute continued to escalate. In China, film distributors have suspended the release of several Japanese films, citing unfavourable domestic sentiment. Movies such as Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Hot! Scorching Kasukabe Dancers and Cells at Work! will no longer be screened in mainland theatres as initially scheduled.
Speaking on the situation, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the advisory to citizens was based on a comprehensive assessment of the security environment in China. He urged Japanese nationals to leave any situation immediately if they feel uneasy or notice suspicious individuals. The ongoing diplomatic strain has also coincided with heightened regional activity, including the movement of Chinese coast guard vessels near the Senkaku Islands, which are controlled by Japan but claimed by China. Japan’s coast guard reported that it had driven the Chinese ships away, while the United States reaffirmed its commitment to defend Japan, including the Senkaku Islands, under the Japan-US security treaty.
Japan’s economic security minister Kimi Onoda expressed concern about the country’s heavy dependence on China for essential minerals and manufacturing materials. She said that overreliance on a country willing to use economic pressure poses risks for both supply chains and tourism. Trade Minister Ryosei Akazawa noted that China’s export controls on rare earth materials have not changed so far, but the government is closely monitoring the situation.
Amid rising tensions, Japanese business leaders met Prime Minister Takaichi to urge more dialogue and political stability, stressing that steady diplomatic relations are essential for economic cooperation. However, experts believe the situation remains sensitive. Cornell University international relations specialist Allen Carlson noted that both countries now appear to be “on a knife’s edge,” as recent attempts to ease tensions have not significantly improved relations.
Although Japan has expressed openness to dialogue during the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, China has stated that its premier has no plans to meet with Takaichi on the sidelines. With travel warnings, public sentiment shifts, and political disagreements intensifying, the diplomatic environment between Japan and China remains strained, with no immediate resolution in sight.
