James D. Watson, the American scientist whose groundbreaking discovery of DNA’s double helix transformed biology and medicine, has died at 97. Watson’s work with Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins in 1953 unveiled the structure of DNA, a discovery that reshaped science and society.
At just 24, Watson helped unlock the secret of hereditary information. The double helix revealed how genetic material duplicates, enabling advances in genetics, medicine, genealogy, and forensic science. From gene therapy to tracing family trees and solving crimes, the impact of his work remains profound decades later.
The discovery quickly became a cultural symbol. The twisting ladder of DNA appeared in art, literature, and even postage stamps, embodying science itself. Watson’s later career involved guiding the Human Genome Project, mentoring young scientists, and influencing science policy, though he never again made a breakthrough of equal magnitude.
Watson’s life was not without controversy. Remarks on race and intelligence, especially regarding Black people, sparked international criticism. In 2007, comments questioning equality led to his suspension from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where he had served in leadership roles for nearly 40 years. He retired shortly afterward. His statements continued to draw attention, prompting the lab to revoke honorary titles in 2019.
Despite these controversies, Watson’s contributions to science remain foundational. The double helix not only explained how life replicates at a molecular level but also opened doors to ethical and societal debates on genetics. His work continues to influence researchers, medical professionals, and educators worldwide.
Watson’s legacy is a mix of monumental scientific achievement and contentious public commentary, leaving behind a story of brilliance and complexity that will be studied for generations.
