Israeli tanks have moved deeper into both north and south Gaza, escalating hostilities by firing shells into residential areas, which tragically resulted in the deaths of at least six Palestinians. Residents of Shejaia in northern Gaza and Rafah in the south reported intensified military activity as Israeli forces advanced. In Shejaia, where tanks re-entered four days ago, families found themselves trapped as shells struck homes, causing widespread devastation.
According to Israeli military sources, the operation in Shejaia targeted Palestinian gunmen and military sites, claiming multiple lives and disrupting local infrastructure. The situation remained volatile as Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters engaged in fierce clashes with Israeli forces, using anti-tank rockets and mortars in their defense.
In Rafah, near the Egyptian border, Israeli tanks expanded their presence across various districts, including east, west, and central areas. Medics confirmed that six individuals were killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a house in the densely populated Shaboura neighborhood. The victims, identified as members of the Zurub family, were mourned by relatives who gathered at Nasser Hospital in nearby Khan Younis.

Amid escalating tensions, reports emerged of Israeli forces setting fire to Al-Awda mosque in Rafah, a significant cultural and religious site in the city. Israeli military officials stated that their operations in Rafah aimed to eradicate remaining Hamas militant groups and dismantle underground tunnels used for attacks.
Efforts by Arab mediators, supported by the United States, have thus far failed to broker a ceasefire acceptable to both parties. Hamas insists on a resolution that includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an end to military actions, while Israel maintains its stance for temporary pauses in the conflict until Hamas, in power since 2007, is effectively neutralized.
The latest escalation traces back to October 7, triggered by a militant incursion into southern Israel by Hamas-led forces, resulting in casualties and hostage-taking. Israel's retaliatory measures, characterized by air and ground offensives, have inflicted significant casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza, exacerbating humanitarian crises and international appeals for de-escalation.
The ongoing conflict underscores the complexities of regional tensions and the humanitarian toll on civilian populations caught in the crossfire, with casualties reported predominantly among non-combatants according to Gaza health officials. Israel acknowledges military losses but maintains that a substantial portion of Palestinian casualties are combatants, reflecting differing narratives amid ongoing international calls for peace and humanitarian aid to alleviate suffering in Gaza.
