Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan, has been released from prison after nearly nine months of incarceration. Her release from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi comes following a bail grant by the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday. This was confirmed by Naeem Haider Panjutha, a lawyer representing Khan.
In January, both Bibi and Khan were sentenced to 14 years in prison for their involvement in a case related to the illegal sale of state gifts. They were found guilty of unlawfully retaining and selling gifts valued at over 140 million rupees (approximately $505,000) that were received from the Toshakhana—the state treasury—during Khan’s premiership from 2018 to 2022. The couple has consistently denied the allegations, claiming that the charges are politically motivated and intended to undermine Khan, who has faced a multitude of legal challenges since his ousting as prime minister in April 2022.

The current Sharif-led government has asserted that it does not interfere in judicial matters, but the ongoing political standoff has plunged Pakistan into its worst political crisis in decades, affecting its 241 million citizens. Despite the controversies, Khan remains a popular figure, with candidates from his party securing the most seats in the general elections held in February.
Since his removal from office, Khan has been embroiled in over 150 legal cases, including accusations of inciting violence. He was arrested in May 2023 and later imprisoned in August following the corruption case. Bibi, Khan's third wife, was first arrested in January, and although she and Khan were acquitted in July on unrelated charges regarding the legality of their marriage, she was subsequently re-arrested in connection with the state gifts case.
Following her release, a party chairman stated that Bibi was en route to her residence in Islamabad. The couple’s ongoing legal battles and political challenges continue to dominate headlines in Pakistan as the nation navigates through its turbulent political landscape.
