BCCI Pushes ICC to Resolve Asia Cup Trophy Standoff

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially raised the issue of the missing Asia Cup trophy during the ICC Board meetings in Dubai, bringing fresh attention to a month-long standoff that has baffled the cricket world.

India clinched the Asia Cup title after defeating Pakistan in the final on September 28 in Dubai. But more than a month later, the team is still waiting for its trophy — which, according to reports, remains locked in the custody of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Talks Held in Cordial Atmosphere

Sources told Cricbuzz that discussions at the ICC meeting were polite but firm. Representing India, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the trophy “rightfully belongs to the Indian team” and must be handed over immediately. He emphasized that the issue is about respect for the players and the spirit of the game, not politics.

The trophy is believed to be lying at the ACC’s Dubai office, with clear orders that it cannot be moved without Naqvi’s approval.

ICC Offers to Mediate

The ICC, which oversees international cricket governance, has offered to mediate if required. A special panel could be formed to ensure a swift resolution. Several ICC directors reportedly voiced concern that withholding a championship trophy reflects poorly on the sport’s integrity and administration.

Interestingly, Mohsin Naqvi’s attendance at the meeting was uncertain until the last moment. He has missed several ICC events in recent months but arrived in Dubai just in time for the board discussions, adding intrigue to the proceedings.

How the Controversy Began

The trophy row began on the night of the final. India’s players reportedly refused to accept the trophy directly from Naqvi due to his role as Pakistan’s interior minister, which they felt was inappropriate given the political sensitivities. Soon after, the trophy was quietly removed from the stage — sparking speculation and confusion.

In the weeks that followed, BCCI formally wrote to the ACC seeking the trophy’s handover but received no response. The Indian board has now reiterated that it will not accept the trophy from Naqvi under any circumstances.
