Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms, but sometimes users may want to delete their account permanently. Whether it’s for privacy concerns, reducing screen time, or taking a break from social media, knowing the correct steps is essential.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you delete your Instagram account permanently safely and effectively in 2025.
Before deleting your account, it’s important to understand the consequences:
All photos, videos, stories, and messages will be permanently deleted.
You will lose followers, likes, and comments.
You cannot reactivate the account once deleted.
Your username will become available for others to use.
Tip: If you are unsure, you can temporarily disable your account instead, which preserves your data.
Before deleting your account, it’s a good idea to download a copy of your data:
Open Instagram and go to Settings > Security > Download Data.
Enter your email address to receive a copy of all your photos, videos, and messages.
Instagram will send a download link via email within a few hours.
Result: You can keep your memories even after deletion.
Instagram does not allow permanent deletion from the app, so you’ll need to use a browser (desktop or mobile):
Go to the Instagram Delete Your Account page.
Log in with your username and password.
Select a reason for deleting your account from the dropdown menu.
Re-enter your password to confirm.
Click “Permanently delete my account”.
Result: Your account and all data will be permanently removed.
If you want a break from Instagram but might return later:
Log in via a browser.
Go to Profile > Edit Profile > Temporarily Disable Account.
Choose a reason and enter your password.
Click “Temporarily Disable Account”.
Result: Your account is hidden from others, but all data remains intact.
Make sure you remember your login credentials.
Clear the Instagram app cache if using mobile devices.
Remove any linked accounts, like Facebook, to prevent future logins.
Once deleted, avoid trying to log in again, as it won’t be possible.
After deletion, it’s a good idea to:
Remove Instagram-related apps from your phone.
Revoke third-party app access if connected via Instagram.
Ensure your email and phone number aren’t linked to other unwanted accounts.
Result: Your digital footprint will be reduced, enhancing privacy.
Q1: Can I delete my Instagram account from the app?
No, Instagram only allows permanent deletion through a browser, either on desktop or mobile.
Q2: How long does Instagram take to delete an account?
Deletion is immediate after confirmation, but some data may remain on Instagram servers for a short period.
Q3: Can I recover my account after deletion?
No, once deleted, your account cannot be recovered, and all content is lost permanently.
Q4: What if I just want a break from Instagram?
You can temporarily disable your account, which hides your profile and content but preserves your data.
Q5: Should I backup my Instagram data before deletion?
Yes. Use the Download Data feature in settings to save your photos, videos, and messages before deletion.
