In 2025, the United Arab Emirates celebrates Emirati Women’s Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the achievements, contributions, and leadership of Emirati women in the nation. This year marks a special occasion as it celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Emirati Women’s Day. To honor this milestone, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the President and CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA), released a special tribute video dedicated to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.

Sheikha Fatima, known as the Mother of the Nation, is the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, the President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and the Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation. She has dedicated over five decades of service to creating opportunities for Emirati women and guiding the nation’s vision for women’s empowerment.

A Tribute to Visionary Leadership

In her tribute, Sheikha Shamma highlighted how Sheikha Fatima’s leadership has left a lasting impact on generations of Emirati women. She mentioned that Sheikha Fatima’s words are engraved in the hearts of the nation and that her vision has shaped the future of women in the UAE. Sheikha Shamma emphasized that her strength has been a foundation driving others to serve the nation with dedication, pride, and responsibility.

Sheikha Shamma also spoke about the shared responsibility in nation-building, explaining that women and men work together with determination and perseverance. She said, “Today, we celebrate your leadership, and every woman who has left a mark – those who preceded us, those who walk alongside us, and those who will come after us. From the woman who protected her home and family, to the young woman carving her path towards leadership today – your legacy lives within them all.”

This message reflects the theme of this year’s Emirati Women’s Day: “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years.” It marks half a century since the establishment of the General Women’s Union in 1975, which has been a cornerstone of women’s empowerment in the UAE.

The Legacy of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak

Sheikha Fatima has played a pivotal role in shaping opportunities for Emirati women across the country. Her work has created programs and institutions that support women’s education, leadership, and personal development. She has always emphasized that women’s success is vital to the growth and stability of the nation.

Over the years, her leadership has inspired millions of Emirati women. Sheikha Fatima’s principles focus on dignity, patience, faith, and love of country, which have been passed down from generation to generation. Today, these values continue to guide young women in the UAE as they pursue careers, leadership roles, and contributions to society.

Women in Unity and Collaboration

The tribute by Sheikha Shamma also highlighted the importance of national unity and collaboration. She explained that every achievement of Emirati women is part of a larger effort to build the nation. Through dedication and cooperation, women have become active participants in areas like education, healthcare, governance, and environmental sustainability.

Sheikha Shamma’s message stressed that nation-building is a shared effort where men and women complement each other. She underlined that the achievements of Emirati women are not only a reflection of individual success but also of collective progress for the country.

Sheikha Shamma: A Leader in Sustainability and Gender Equity

As the President and CEO of UICCA, Sheikha Shamma has made remarkable contributions to sustainability and women’s empowerment. She has been recognized globally, including being named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader in 2023.

Her work includes founding multiple organizations that focus on gender balance, creating platforms where women can grow, lead, and participate in shaping society. Sheikha Shamma’s tribute to Sheikha Fatima reflects the continuing influence of the Mother of the Nation, showing how her vision inspires future generations of Emirati women.

Celebrating 50 Years of Emirati Women’s Day

This year’s celebration, themed “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years,” is not just about recognizing the past achievements of women but also about looking forward to the future of Emirati women. It marks 50 years since the establishment of the General Women’s Union, which has been at the forefront of advocating for women’s rights and opportunities.

The tribute emphasizes that the success of Emirati women is built on the strong foundation laid by leaders like Sheikha Fatima, who dedicated her life to the growth of society. It also recognizes the role of every woman, from those managing homes to young women pursuing leadership positions, in shaping a stronger and more unified nation.

Principles That Guide Generations

Sheikha Shamma highlighted that the values inherited from previous generations continue to guide Emirati women today. These include:

  • Dignity – respecting oneself and others

  • Patience – working steadily to achieve goals

  • Faith – believing in a better future

  • Love of Country – contributing to national development

These principles ensure that women remain active contributors to society, building a sustainable and inclusive future for the UAE.

Inspiration for Future Generations

The tribute video by Sheikha Shamma serves as a source of inspiration for young Emirati women who are pursuing education, leadership, and careers in various fields. By honoring Sheikha Fatima’s legacy, the video also emphasizes the importance of women supporting each other and the nation as a whole.

Through her words, Sheikha Shamma reminded everyone that every woman has the potential to leave a lasting impact. Whether it is through protecting a family, leading a team, or making contributions to society, women play a vital role in shaping the future of the nation.

Emirati Women’s Day 2025 is not only a celebration of achievements but also a reminder of the ongoing journey towards equality, empowerment, and national development. The tribute by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan honors the vision and leadership of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak and highlights how her legacy continues to inspire generations of Emirati women.

As the UAE celebrates 50 years of Emirati Women’s Day, it reflects on the progress made in women’s empowerment while encouraging continued collaboration, dedication, and unity. Women, together with men, continue to play a vital role in building a brighter, more inclusive future for the country, carrying forward the values of dignity, patience, faith, and love for the nation.

This milestone reminds everyone that Emirati women, past, present, and future, are central to the nation’s growth, leadership, and success.
