Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, is celebrated across India and around the world on November 5, 2025, marking the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and the founder of Sikhism. This auspicious day is observed with great devotion, processions, prayers, and community services, reflecting the enduring spiritual, social, and cultural impact of Guru Nanak’s teachings.
On this day, devotees participate in Prabhat Pheris, early morning devotional processions in which hymns praising the Guru are sung. Nagar Kirtans, public processions featuring the Guru Granth Sahib, are carried in beautifully decorated palkis accompanied by devotees singing shabads (sacred hymns) and performing Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art. Gurudwaras across India and abroad are adorned with colorful flowers, lights, and lamps, creating a spiritual and festive atmosphere that draws thousands of visitors.
The practice of Langar, or the community kitchen, remains a central part of Gurpurab celebrations. Free meals are served to all visitors regardless of caste, religion, or social status, embodying Guru Nanak’s teachings of seva (selfless service), equality, and human dignity. The act of feeding others and participating in community service is considered one of the most important ways to honor the Guru on this day.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan) in 1469. From a young age, he showed profound spiritual insight and wisdom. At the age of 30, he experienced a divine revelation that inspired him to preach a universal message of love, equality, devotion to one God, and rejection of social inequalities like caste discrimination. He emphasized the importance of honest work, truthfulness, and compassion for all living beings. His teachings were later compiled in the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred scripture of Sikhism, which continues to guide millions worldwide.
The celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti also involves sharing greetings, quotes, and wishes among family, friends, and communities. Devotees often post messages on social media, WhatsApp, and other platforms, spreading the spiritual teachings and life lessons of Guru Nanak. Messages frequently highlight themes of peace, humility, compassion, and selfless service, reminding everyone to live according to the Guru’s principles.
Guru Nanak’s influence transcends religion and geography. His vision of universal brotherhood, equality, and devotion has inspired generations and continues to resonate in modern times. The festival is not only a commemoration of his birth but also a reaffirmation of the values he stood for—spiritual wisdom, social justice, and harmony among people.
As communities celebrate Gurpurab 2025, the day serves as a reminder to reflect on Guru Nanak’s life and teachings. By participating in devotional practices, engaging in selfless service, and spreading messages of goodwill, devotees honor the legacy of a Guru whose message remains profoundly relevant even centuries after his birth. Guru Nanak Jayanti is, therefore, both a spiritual observance and a celebration of values that unite humanity.
