Alphabet Inc.'s Google has officially confirmed a substantial workforce reduction, resulting in layoffs for hundreds of employees across its digital assistant, hardware, and engineering teams. This move is part of the company's ongoing initiative to streamline operations and cut costs.
Among those affected, employees working on the voice-based Google Assistant and the augmented reality hardware team bear the brunt of the layoffs. The central engineering organization within the company is also not exempt from these cuts.
A Google spokesperson stated, "Throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, aligning their resources with the company's most significant product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make organizational changes, which include role eliminations on a global scale."
Reports from Semafor initially brought attention to the layoffs within the Google Assistant team, while 9to5Google highlighted a reorganization within the hardware team. Employees impacted by the layoffs have already started receiving the news, with the company offering them the opportunity to apply for available positions elsewhere within Google.
In response to these job cuts, the Alphabet Workers Union, representing some of the affected employees, issued a critical statement on X (formerly known as Twitter). The union expressed concern, emphasizing the dedication of its members and their daily efforts to develop high-quality products for users. The statement condemned the company for laying off employees while consistently generating substantial profits, stating, "We won't stop fighting until our jobs are safe!"
This announcement marks a significant development in Google's ongoing efforts to restructure its workforce, with implications for employees in key areas of digital innovation and technology development within the company.
