Global Heatwave Scorches Earth with Record June Temperatures in 13 Years

Brussels: The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported that June 2024 marked the hottest June on record, continuing an unprecedented streak of record-breaking temperatures. Since June 2023, every month has consecutively been the hottest on record globally compared to the corresponding months in previous years, totaling 13 months.

Scientists are now predicting that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year since global surface temperature records began in the mid-1800s. This forecast is attributed to both human-induced climate change and the natural El Niño weather phenomenon, which have collectively driven temperatures to historic highs this year.

Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist at Berkeley Earth, stated there is a high probability—around 95%—that 2024 will set a new record for global temperatures. The ongoing climate crisis has already unleashed catastrophic impacts worldwide in 2024, including deadly heatwaves during the haj pilgrimage and prolonged heatwaves in places like New Delhi, resulting in numerous fatalities.

Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, emphasized that while El Niño contributes to temperature increases, human activities such as burning fossil fuels remain the primary driver of global warming. Despite international pledges to reduce emissions, global efforts have not effectively curbed the steady rise in temperatures over recent decades.

According to C3S, the average global temperature for the 12-month period ending in June was the highest ever recorded, surpassing pre-industrial levels by 1.64 degrees Celsius. As the world enters a phase of neutral climate conditions following the waning of El Niño, experts warn of the urgent need for decisive action to mitigate climate change and its devastating consequences.
