Gansu Earthquake: 5.6 Magnitude Hits Longxi, No Casualties

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook Longxi County in Dingxi City, Gansu Province, northwest China, at 5:49 a.m. on Saturday, the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) reported. The quake’s epicentre was located at 34.91°N latitude and 104.58°E longitude, at a depth of 10 km.

The tremor was strongly felt in Longxi, Zhangxian, Weiyuan, and Lintao counties in Dingxi City, as well as in Wushan County, Tianshui City. While no casualties have been reported so far, some rural houses in Longxi sustained structural damage.

Rescue and Emergency Response

Local firefighting and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to affected areas. The China Earthquake Administration activated a level-III emergency service response to strengthen monitoring and provide regular updates.

The State Council earthquake relief headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management launched a level-IV emergency response, sending a work team to assist with local relief operations. National comprehensive fire and rescue teams have already arrived at the epicentre, while 200 rescuers with 28 vehicles and 26 personnel from specialised rescue units with seven vehicles are en route.

China is prone to earthquakes due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This tectonic activity, which has been active for 50–60 million years, created the Himalayas and continues to generate significant stress within the Earth’s crust.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in affected areas to follow safety instructions and stay alert for possible aftershocks.

Authorities have confirmed that emergency operations are ongoing, with teams assessing damage and assisting residents. No injuries have been reported at this stage.
