India does not expect any major problems in Foxconn’s operations after some employees from China were asked to return home over the past few months, a senior Indian government official said this week. The official confirmed that even though a few hundred workers left, the company managed to maintain smooth operations at its Indian facilities.
Foxconn’s Presence in India
Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, has been operating in India for several years. Its main manufacturing plant is near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and it has recently started building a new facility near Bengaluru, Karnataka. These plants play an important role in assembling iPhones for Apple.

According to S. Krishnan, secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the company has been able to continue its operations without any major disruption. "Although some of the Chinese workers had to leave because they were asked to return, operations did not really suffer significantly," Krishnan said during a visit to a trade show in Taiwan.
He added that Foxconn managed the situation by using workers from Taiwan, the United States, and India itself. This helped the company maintain production without major interruptions.
Return of Chinese Workers
Earlier this year, Foxconn asked hundreds of engineers and technicians from mainland China to return to their home country. Bloomberg News reported this in July. The exact reason for this request has not been officially clarified by Foxconn.
Despite this, officials say that Foxconn’s operations in India remained steady. Most of the iPhones for Apple are still assembled in China, but the company has been working to increase production in India. The aim is to reduce reliance on China, especially due to the potential impact of US tariffs on Chinese goods, which have been threatened by former US President Donald Trump. These tariffs were delayed as China and the US negotiate a trade deal.
Foxconn’s Expansion Plans
Foxconn’s investment in India has been growing steadily. The company is not only running its plant near Chennai but is also constructing a new facility near Bengaluru. This expansion shows Foxconn’s commitment to making India an important part of its global manufacturing network.
Krishnan said, "Our understanding is that Foxconn stands committed to see through all the investments in India. Their expansion in India has been very significant."
Apple’s Strategy in India
Apple has been keen to ramp up iPhone production in India. This move is part of its strategy to diversify manufacturing outside China. By producing more iPhones in India, Apple hopes to mitigate risks related to trade tensions and tariffs between the US and China.
Foxconn, as Apple’s main assembler, plays a crucial role in this strategy. The company has already started iPhone 17 production at its Bengaluru facility. This step shows that Apple is serious about making India a major hub for its products.
India-China Relations Context
The movement of Chinese workers from India comes against the backdrop of tense relations between India and China. In 2020, a military clash took place along the Himalayan border, leading to increased political tensions. Following this, India introduced several measures affecting Chinese companies. These included restrictions on Chinese investments, a ban on hundreds of Chinese apps, and a reduction in air passenger routes between the two countries.
However, in recent months, the relationship between India and China has improved. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China last month, marking his first visit in seven years. During this visit, he met Chinese President Xi Jinping, and both leaders discussed ways to strengthen ties and cooperation.
Smooth Operations Despite Worker Changes
Krishnan emphasized that Foxconn has managed to continue its operations smoothly despite the return of Chinese workers. The company relied on local employees and staff from other countries to fill the gaps.
"Foxconn has been in their plant near Chennai for the last five years, and a new plant is coming up near Bengaluru. So they were able to manage with some of the workers there, some people from Taiwan, and some people from the United States," Krishnan said.
The Indian government is closely monitoring Foxconn’s progress, as the company is a key player in India’s growing electronics and smartphone manufacturing industry.
Significance for India
Foxconn’s operations are important for India’s goal to become a major hub for smartphone manufacturing. By increasing iPhone production in India, the country can benefit in multiple ways:
Job Creation: More local jobs will be created in the electronics manufacturing sector.
Technology Transfer: Indian workers gain experience with advanced manufacturing processes.
Economic Growth: Increased production contributes to India’s economy and exports.
The expansion of Foxconn in India is also part of a broader trend, as several global technology companies are seeking to diversify their supply chains outside China.
Challenges Ahead
Even though operations continue smoothly, there are still challenges. Moving production from one country to another requires careful planning, training of workers, and investment in infrastructure. Foxconn’s ability to manage these challenges effectively will determine the long-term success of Apple’s production in India.
Foxconn’s Indian operations have shown resilience despite the return of some Chinese employees. With existing plants in Chennai, a new facility in Bengaluru, and support from workers from Taiwan, the United States, and India, the company continues to produce iPhones without major disruption.
Apple’s strategy to increase production in India reflects a broader effort to diversify manufacturing and reduce dependence on China. Meanwhile, improving India-China relations and government support for electronics manufacturing further strengthen Foxconn’s position in India.
S. Krishnan’s statements provide reassurance that Foxconn is committed to its investments in India, ensuring continued growth in India’s smartphone manufacturing sector. This development highlights India’s potential as a global electronics hub and the country’s growing importance in the global tech supply chain.
