New South Wales and Sydney found themselves under a flood alert as torrential rains battered Australia's southeast, unleashing nearly a month's worth of rainfall on Friday. The deluge, which prompted flood warnings, urged authorities to caution against non-essential travel and advised residents to remain indoors.
According to data from Australia's Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney, housing over 5 million inhabitants, endured a staggering 111mm (4.4 inches) of rainfall within a 24-hour period, closely trailing the monthly mean of 121.5mm for April.

Forecasts indicated a potential escalation of rainfall throughout Friday, with some regions expected to receive up to 200mm before a coastal trough shifts eastward towards the Tasman Sea by Saturday, as reported by the weather bureau.
Addressing the severity of the weather event, New South Wales State Premier Chris Minns emphasized caution during a televised media briefing, stressing the importance of avoiding unnecessary risks amidst the inclement conditions.
The downpour took a toll on transportation infrastructure, with major train stations in Sydney witnessing damage to rail equipment, causing disruptions to morning commuters' travel plans.
Emergency response teams in New South Wales fielded over 500 distress calls, undertaking rescue operations for seven individuals trapped in floodwaters, as warnings were issued for multiple rivers in the eastern region.
Of particular concern is the Warragamba Dam, a critical water source supplying 80% of Sydney's water needs, currently hovering at around 96% capacity. Officials cautioned that the dam could potentially overflow by Monday once the storm subsides, amplifying concerns over water management and flood risk mitigation.
As residents and authorities brace for further rainfall and potential flooding, vigilance and preparedness remain paramount in navigating the evolving weather conditions gripping New South Wales and Sydney.
