Last Solar Eclipse of 2025 to Dazzle Skywatchers Tonight

Skywatchers are in for one last celestial spectacle of the year as the final solar eclipse of 2025 takes place tonight, September 21. Following the dramatic Total Lunar Eclipse, or Blood Moon, earlier this year, this event will mark the end of an exciting year for astronomy lovers.

Unlike a total eclipse, this will be a partial solar eclipse, where the Moon covers only part of the Sun. In some regions, up to 85 percent of the Sun’s disk will be obscured. The phenomenon will begin at 10:59 pm IST on Sunday night, reach its peak at 1:11 am IST early Monday, and conclude at 3:23 am IST.

The eclipse will not be visible from India but can be seen from parts of Australia, Antarctica, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. For those in these regions, the sight promises to be a memorable one, with the Sun appearing as if a dark bite has been taken out of it.

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth. While in a total solar eclipse the Sun is completely hidden, a partial eclipse allows only a portion of it to be obscured, offering a subtler yet striking view.

This event comes just a day before the autumnal equinox on September 22, when the Sun is positioned directly above the equator. On this day, Earth is neither tilted toward nor away from the Sun, resulting in nearly equal day and night hours across the globe.

The year 2025 featured four eclipses in total—two partial solar eclipses and two total lunar eclipses. Tonight’s eclipse is the second and final solar event of the year. Looking ahead, the next solar eclipses are scheduled for February 17 and August 12, 2026, though these too will not be visible from India. Indian viewers, however, can anticipate a solar eclipse in August 2027, which will be visible across the country.
