Three individuals in their 70s and 80s tragically lost their lives in France's northeastern Aube region on Saturday when a tree fell on the car they were traveling in during severe winds, as reported by local authorities to AFP. The incident occurred amidst a series of ferocious storms and heavy rainfall that swept across France, Switzerland, and Italy over the weekend, resulting in a total of five fatalities.
In Switzerland, devastating torrential rains triggered a landslide in the southeastern part of the country, claiming the lives of two individuals, with one person reported missing according to police in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. Among the victims were two women who were visiting the Alpine region.
Emergency responders faced significant challenges due to the adverse weather conditions, hampering rescue efforts and rendering several valleys inaccessible. Approximately 300 people participating in a football tournament in Peccia and nearly 70 others at a holiday camp in Mogno were being evacuated. Complicating matters further, parts of the affected areas were left without drinking water due to disruptions in the local infrastructure.

In Switzerland's Valais canton, civil security services evacuated "several hundred" individuals and closed multiple roads after rivers, including the Rhone and its tributaries, overflowed in various locations. The severe rainfall also inflicted substantial damage in southeastern Switzerland the previous weekend, resulting in one fatality.
Meanwhile, northern Italy's Aosta Valley witnessed widespread flooding, with images circulating on social media depicting rivers swollen from the intense rainfall rushing down mountain slopes.
Scientists underscored that these extreme weather events, including floods and storms, are exacerbated by climate change driven by human activities. They warned that such events are becoming more severe, frequent, and prolonged, impacting communities across Europe and underscoring the urgent need for enhanced climate resilience and mitigation measures.
