Europe Urged to Boost Climate Action Amid Progress

Europe remains a global leader in the fight against climate change, but significant challenges persist, the European Environment Agency (EEA) warned on Monday.

The agency highlighted that while greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union have fallen by 37 percent since 1990, the overall state of the continent’s environment is still concerning. Reductions have been driven by lower fossil fuel use and a doubling of renewable energy since 2005.

“Significant progress has been made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, but the overall state of Europe's environment is not good,” the EEA said in a statement presenting its latest report.

The report, compiled from data across 38 European countries, also warned that the continent’s natural habitats continue to face degradation, overexploitation, and biodiversity loss.

Environmental experts say that while Europe’s efforts have set global benchmarks in climate action, more robust measures are needed to strengthen resilience against the impacts of global warming and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

The EEA report underlines the urgency for policy measures that not only reduce emissions but also protect natural ecosystems and prevent further biodiversity decline.

The European Environment Agency plans to release follow-up assessments and policy recommendations later this year to guide EU nations in meeting climate and environmental targets.
