In a major development for the mobile app industry, Google and Epic Games have reached a U.S. court settlement to resolve a long-standing antitrust dispute over Android app store practices. The move comes after Epic’s 2020 lawsuit claimed Google was monopolizing app access and in-app purchases on Android devices.
The agreement proposes significant reforms to Google’s Play Store, designed to lower fees, expand consumer choice, and create a fairer environment for developers. Key elements of the settlement include allowing users to easily download and install third-party app stores that meet new security standards. Additionally, developers will be able to direct users to alternative payment methods both inside apps and via external web links, with a capped service fee of 9% or 20% on such transactions.
The case has seen several high-profile moments, including a 2023 jury trial in which Epic won, and a sweeping injunction issued by U.S. District Judge James Donato last year. Google had argued that some mandated reforms went too far, potentially compromising user safety and harming its competitive position. Appeals in federal courts, including a recent rejection by the U.S. Supreme Court of Google’s request to freeze parts of the injunction, kept the case in the spotlight.
Industry observers note that the settlement could reshape the Android ecosystem, providing more freedom for developers while maintaining safety standards for users. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney called the agreement “awesome,” emphasizing that it reinforces Android’s vision as an open platform. Meanwhile, Google has maintained that it never engaged in unlawful practices, but views the settlement as a balanced way to move forward.
The deal now awaits formal approval from Judge Donato, who is scheduled to review the proposal in an upcoming hearing.
