Elon Musk’s social media company, X, has agreed to pay around $10 million to settle a case filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The Wall Street Journal reported this news. The case was against Twitter, now called X, and its former boss, Jack Dorsey.

This makes X the second social media company to settle with Trump. Trump had sued them after they blocked his accounts when his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in January 2021. At that time, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube removed Trump’s accounts because they feared more violence. Trump and his supporters said these companies were unfairly silencing conservative voices.
Last month, Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, also settled a similar case with Trump. They agreed to pay about $25 million. In July 2021, Trump had sued Twitter (now X), Facebook, and Google’s parent company, Alphabet. He said these companies were stopping free speech by blocking him.
At first, Trump’s legal team thought about dropping the case against X. The reason was Trump’s good relationship with Musk. The report also said that Musk gave $250 million to Trump’s election campaign. But in the end, Trump’s team decided to settle the case instead.
Musk is not only the boss of Tesla but also leads a new U.S. government department called the Department of Government Efficiency. This department aims to reduce government offices and make work faster, which fits Trump’s political ideas.
Trump’s lawyers are also trying to settle a case with Google. Google had blocked Trump from YouTube after the Capitol attack. Alphabet, the company that owns Google and YouTube, has not commented yet.
So far, X, former Twitter boss Jack Dorsey, and the White House have not given any statements about the case or the settlement.
