Elon Musk recently engaged with his audience on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a comprehensive list of 11 audiobook recommendations tailored for enthusiasts of Roman history. Musk emphasized the depth and value of these selections, acknowledging they would require significant time commitment but are highly rewarding.
Starting with intellectual classics, Musk's first recommendation was "The Story of Civilization" by Will and Ariel Durant, known for its expansive coverage of human history. He then suggested the Penguin edition of "The Iliad," an ancient Greek epic attributed to Homer, followed by "The Road to Serfdom" by Friedrich Hayek, a seminal work on political philosophy and economics.
Continuing his literary journey, Musk included "American Caesar" by William Manchester, a biography of General Douglas MacArthur, and "Masters of Doom" by David Kushner, chronicling the rise of video game developers John Carmack and John Romero. His list expanded to encompass "The Wages of Destruction" by Adam Tooze, exploring Nazi Germany's economic history, and "The Storm of Steel" by Ernst Junger, a firsthand account of World War I.

Further enriching the selection, Musk recommended "The Guns of August" by Barbara W. Tuchman, a detailed narrative of the events leading to World War I. He also highlighted historical accounts such as "The Gallic Wars" by Julius Caesar, detailing his military campaigns in Gaul, and "Twelve Against the Gods" by William Bolitho Ryall, profiling various figures from history who defied conventional norms.
Previously in June, Musk had showcased his interest in podcasts during a streaming session on X. He praised Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" podcast for its gripping storytelling and unexpected twists reminiscent of "The Twilight Zone." Additionally, Musk recommended the "Explorers Podcast," which explores the lives and adventures of history's notable explorers, and "The Age of Napoleon Podcast," focusing on Napoleon Bonaparte's life and the broader European context during his era.
Through these recommendations, Elon Musk not only shared his passion for historical narratives and intellectual discourse but also highlighted the enduring relevance of these works in understanding past events and their implications for contemporary society. His engagement underscores a commitment to continuous learning and appreciation for deep, thought-provoking literature and podcasts.
