Dubai unveiled ambitious plans on Sunday to significantly expand its Metro and tram network by more than doubling the current number of stations by 2040. This development drive, part of a broader economic strategy outlined during a meeting of the Executive Council of Dubai chaired by Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, aims to transform the city's public transport landscape.
Currently boasting 55 Metro stations (35 on the red line and 20 on the green line) and 11 tram stops, Dubai plans to increase these figures to 96 stations covering 140 kilometers by 2030. By 2040, the goal is to have 140 stations spread over 228 square kilometers, facilitating easier access across the emirate.
Central to this expansion is the concept of a '20-minute city,' where areas around Metro stations will be developed to enhance urban living. The initiative aims to raise public transport usage to 45% while reducing carbon emissions and improving public spaces for pedestrians. It also seeks to attract more residents and businesses to locations near Metro stations, fostering economic growth and sustainability.

Highlighting a major component of this expansion is the Dh18 billion ($4.9 billion) Blue Line project, set to commence construction this year. This new line will add 14 stations and extend the Metro network by 30 kilometers, with over half of the expansion planned underground. Scheduled for completion in 2029, coinciding with the Dubai Metro's 20th anniversary, the Blue Line will connect key urban hubs including Bur Dubai, Deira, Downtown, Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina, JBR, and Expo City Dubai.
The announcement also included initiatives beyond infrastructure, such as doubling the number of Emiratis working in mosques through the 'Manbar' program. This effort aims to enhance services at mosques by providing citizens with necessary skills and qualifications. Additionally, the 'Ghras Al Khair' program was introduced to promote traditional values of tolerance and national identity through partnerships with young influencers and educational institutions.
Dubai's comprehensive plan underscores its commitment to sustainable urban development, enhanced public transport accessibility, and cultural enrichment, aiming to solidify its position as a global city of the future.
