Dubai Residents Extinguish Pharmacy Fire as E-Bike Battery Explodes.

A fire broke out outside Life Pharmacy in Business Bay when an e-bike battery exploded while being charged. Witnesses connected the incident to a probable short circuit caused by the dampness of the power socket near the pharmacy. A cafeteria worker, along with attentive passersby, played a crucial role in containing the flames, describing the initial moments as loud bangs followed by fire engulfing the pharmacy's glass exterior. Rapid removal of the e-bike was necessary to prevent further damage.

A security guard at Escape Tower, the location of the pharmacy, confirmed that the fire was a result of the e-bike battery explosion. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 pm and was swiftly brought under control.

While e-bikes and e-scooters are generally considered safe, instances of faulty batteries and other hardware, such as chargers, may pose a risk of ignition in some products. The cause behind e-bike fires can be attributed to both chemical and practical factors. Chemically, lithium-ion cells may undergo thermal runaway, causing a sudden surge in battery cell temperature and pressure, along with the release of flammable gas. The ignition of this gas, due to the heightened temperature of the battery, results in a rapid and challenging-to-extinguish fire that also emits toxic fumes.
