Dubai Plans Full Coverage of Smart Traffic System Across Main Roads by 2026

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched Phase II of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project, aiming to achieve full coverage of the emirate's main road network by 2026. Currently covering 60%, the project will extend ITS coverage to 100%, encompassing 710km of roads, up from 480km.

In the initial phase, RTA installed 116 traffic surveillance cameras, bringing the total to 311, and added 100 incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices, totaling 227. Additionally, 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS) were deployed to provide real-time road information, alongside 115 travel time and speed measurement devices. The project also included setting up 17 weather sensor stations and laying 660km of electric power lines and 820km of fiber optic network.

RTA manages Dubai's traffic through the Dubai ITS Center in Al Barsha, employing advanced technologies like AI, big data analytics, IoT, and advanced communication systems. The center plays a crucial role in traffic management, utilizing the "iTraffic" system for enhanced control and decision-making support.

The project aims to integrate Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) and benchmark with global leaders in transportation technology, aiming to improve incident monitoring by 63% and reduce response times by 20% through VMS. This expansion is expected to enhance road network management, optimize traffic flow, and support future mobility solutions including self-driving vehicles.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA's Board of Executive Directors, emphasized the project's goal to enhance public safety and efficiency through advanced ITS infrastructure and real-time information dissemination.
