The echoes of the adhan (call to prayer) for maghrib prayers reverberated within the walls of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Jebel Ali, bringing together people from diverse faiths for an interfaith iftar during Ramadan.
Reflecting the UAE's commitment to religious freedom and tolerance, more than 250 individuals gathered at the Sikh temple in Dubai to break their fast and exchange blessings. Dr. Surender Singh Kandhari, the chairman of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, emphasized the significance of Ramadan as a time for unity, empathy, and compassion, transcending boundaries of faith and culture.
Bubbles Kandhari, Vice-Chairperson of Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, shared the origin of the interfaith iftar, which began in 2012 to celebrate the diversity of communities and nationalities in the UAE. Initially met with apprehension, the event has grown in popularity, uniting people of all backgrounds in camaraderie and mutual understanding.
The iftar was attended by distinguished guests including Sunjay Sudhir, Indian Ambassador to the UAE; Major General Ahmed Khalfan Al Mansoori from the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD); Mirza Al Sayegh, a prominent Emirati member and Former Diplomat; Venu Rajamony, Former Indian Ambassador; and Mohammed Al Muhairi, Director, Community Development Authority (CDA) Dubai, along with representatives from various diplomatic corps, faith leaders, and community members.
Mirza Al Sayegh highlighted the UAE's commitment to peaceful coexistence, acknowledging the country's heritage of tolerance and inclusivity. Sunjay Sudhir praised the diversity present at the Gurudwara, attributing it to the country's environment of harmony, peace, and tolerance fostered by its leaders and government.
The evening also saw participation from Imams, Christian clergy, Bahai representatives, and prominent Dubai-based businessmen. Bishop Paolo Martinelli, head of the Catholic Church in the UAE, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to come together during Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of working together across different religions and cultures to promote peace and understanding.
Kamal Vachani, Partner at Al Maya Group, lauded the event as an inspiring celebration of unity and diversity, embodying the values of tolerance, compassion, and solidarity. The interfaith iftar served as a testament to the UAE's commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among its diverse population.
