Melatonin is a hormone naturally made by the brain that helps the body know when it is time to sleep. Many people take melatonin supplements to sleep better. It is widely seen as safe, easy to buy, and even sold as gummies. But new research has raised questions about whether long-term use of melatonin may be linked to heart problems.
Recently, a study shared by the American Heart Association suggested that people who use melatonin regularly for a long time may have a higher chance of developing heart failure or dying early. The study observed more than 130,000 adults and noted that those who took melatonin often had a 90% higher risk of heart failure compared to those who did not take it.
This created worry among many people who use melatonin every night. In response, NHS surgeon Dr. Karan Rajan spoke about the issue. He said the results do not mean that melatonin itself directly harms the heart. Instead, he explained that many people who have early heart disease often face sleep problems. To deal with sleepless nights, they might start taking melatonin. So the melatonin use may be a sign of an already existing health issue, not the reason for it.
Dr. Rajan pointed out that people with long-term insomnia or stress-related sleep problems already have a higher risk of heart disease. Since these groups are more likely to use melatonin, the link may simply reflect their health condition rather than the supplement causing harm. He said that the study shows a connection, but it does not prove that melatonin is the cause of the problem.
However, Dr. Rajan also warned that many people are taking melatonin in doses that are far higher than what the human body naturally makes. The body usually produces about 0.3 milligrams of melatonin. But in stores, many products come in 3, 5, or even 10 milligrams. This means some people are taking 100 to 1,000 times more than what the body produces by itself. He said that people have started thinking of melatonin as something harmless just because it is “natural” and sold in candy-like products.
Dr. Rajan advised that melatonin should not be used every day for a long time. It is better to use the smallest possible amount and only when necessary. He said that anyone who struggles to sleep regularly should talk to a doctor instead of depending only on supplements.
Health experts also suggest trying simple lifestyle habits to improve sleep. This includes going to bed at the same time every night, reducing phone use before bed, avoiding caffeine late in the day, and making the bedroom calm and quiet.
The new concern does not mean melatonin is dangerous for everyone. It means more awareness is needed so that people use it safely. Doctors say that if someone needs melatonin every night just to sleep, this may be a sign of an underlying health issue. In that case, speaking with a doctor is very important.
This report is based on social media discussions and medical statements shared publicly. Claims in the study are still being researched, and further scientific work will help provide clearer answers in the future.
